The Greenest Datacentre in Switzerland

ComAp Germany together with their long-term partner and solution provider Avesco - the Caterpillar dealer for Switzerland have completed a datacentre project in Eastern Switzerland.

The data center Ostschweiz is in Gais near St. Gallen, at an altitude of 912 meters where the air is cold and the mountains at the front door. The data center is Tier 4, certified by the Uptime Institute, and owned by St. Gallen Appenzellischer Kraftwerk AG and the St. Galler Stadtwerke.

The data center Ostschweiz is one of the greenest data centers in Europe. At 912 m the air is so cold that we can cool the data center during the whole year by using ambient air. The system is very efficient, with photovoltaic panels on the roof and the building façade, so it generates more energy than the data centre needs. So it can be exported to a local cheese factory for them to use.

For the datacentre Ostschweiz we delivered two Cat3516 gen-sets with 2500 kVA power. To avoid a run with less load we coupled both sides with a low load transition so we can also deliver the under voltage supply. For the control of the gen-sets we used the proven products from ComAp. For the gen-sets we use 2x InteliSys NTC BaseBoxes and InteliVision 8 displays, and for the mains breaker and busbar breaker we use InteliMains units with InteliVision 5 displays. We regulate the temperature in the under voltage room with InteliSys and for the SCADA system display we use the InteliVision 8. We use ComAp controllers because the products are easy to use for a very complex control solution.
